Starlink internet has been taking Australia by storm finally offering a decent internet connection to disadvantaged parts of Australia and to people on the go (and without the ridiculous data caps like NBN satellite alternative).
Here’s what you need to know about Starlink Internet connections and installation:
Availability:
It is available in most areas in Australia and as more and more satellites are deployed, the coverage becomes larger and larger. If you are unsure about its availability in your area, you can check their website here
Hardware:
Starlink often change and update their hardware, so it is important to make sure you have all the components you need to make it work in your home or business. This is where we come in – we make an assessment of your requirements, building/ office layout and the required coverage area, as well as what is required to mount the equipment appropriately. Depending on which generation equipment you order and where you order it from, there may be adaptors required, especially if you have other equipment to connect like own router/ network switches, Wireless access points etc.
Providers:
You can opt to go direct with Starlink (for service and hardware) or choose Third Party suppliers such as Telstra, Office Works etc. In most cases, however you will still need to organise your own installer to mount and set up the equipment (like us!) or do it yourself if you are up to the challenge!
When choosing a provider, things to keep in mind are – are they offering the same speeds and bandwidth as Starlink direct, are they using the latest recommended hardware and are there lock in contracts. When a provider is offering a different price for Starlink Satellite internet, it doesn’t mean the product is the same, so read the fine print. Often you will find, the internet data usage might be capped, or speed might be capped, or there is a long term contract you are singing up for.
Reliability:
We have personally been using Starlink for 2 years and from our experience, the quality of internet has been excellent. There are rarely any service interruptions and it works great (and handles without problems) whether you are watching Netflix, making phonecalls, playing online games or using video conferencing like zoom or teams. We haven’t experienced any choppiness, buffering, cutting out or freezing while using the service.
Installation:
As mentioned above, you can get all the required hardware and install the equipment yourself, however I recommend to get a professional installer for many reasons:
- best to install it on the roof to get clear access to the sky to link up to satellite, so positioning is important, as well as appropriate fittings and mounting kit
- cable must be run into the house and best position for router needs to be found in order to get the best signal within the building where internet is to be used
- this might mean installation of new cabling/ outlets, appropriately run cable within walls or externally noting the required separation from hazardous services to be in compliance with ACMA rules and regulations, additional Wireless Access points for optimal coverage as required and inter-connection with other equipment such as network switches, firewalls, router etc. Many of the above-mentioned points require technical qualifications and registrations.
